T is for Task
Does the task involve holding the load away from the body, twisting, stooping, reaching upwards, large vertical movement, long carrying distances, strenuous pushing or pulling, repetitive handling, insufficient rest or a rate of work imposed by a process? Each yes raises the risk.
I is for Individual
Does the task require unusual strength or height? Does it create a hazard for someone who is pregnant, has a health problem or a previous injury? Does the person have the knowledge and training to do it safely? Is their clothing or footwear suitable?
L is for Load
Is the load heavy, bulky or unwieldy, difficult to grasp, unstable or likely to shift, hot, cold, sharp or otherwise harmful? Is the weight marked? Is the centre of gravity off centre?
E is for Environment
Are there space constraints, uneven, slippery or unstable floors, steps or slopes, extremes of temperature or humidity, poor lighting, wind or other conditions that make handling harder?
LITE and TILEO
LITE is the same four factors in a different order, used by trainers who prefer to start with the Load. TILEO adds a fifth letter for Other factors, such as the equipment used, personal protective equipment or the pace set by a machine. Whichever version you use, the assessment looks at the same evidence.
